Carbon loss in tile drainage and surface runoff from a clay loam soil after a half century of continuous and rotational cropping

Tile drainage and surface runoff are major pathways for pollution of water resources by agricultural nutrients chemicals. Little is known, however, the amounts carbon entry into from land. This paper evaluates dissolved organic (DOC) inorganic (DIC) losses in tile a Brookston clay loam after more than half century monoculture maize ( Zea mays L.), continuous bluegrass sod Poa Pratensis maize-oat Avena sativa L.)–alfalfa Medicago rotation. Water loss accounted 27%, 32%, 18% annual precipitation (876 mm) rotation, maize, sod, respectively. comprised 66%–89% rotation but only 15% with remaining 85% due to runoff.
